He is also certified by the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABoIHM), a Biomedical Autism Doctor/ Fellow of the Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs (M.A.P.S.), and an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner (IFMCP) in 2017. Dr. Dane is a Southern California native who was originally drawn to medicine as a practical means to help people from different cultures and economic backgrounds. That led him to study Anthropology at U.C. Santa Cruz, as well as earning a Master’s Degree in Public Health while attending medical school at New York Medical College. After returning home to California to do his pediatric residency training at U.C. Irvine, he was able to finally realize his dream of serving the most needy patients by working in an under-served area of Long Beach.  It was there he was honored to be chosen to receive a grant from the Medical Board of California as part of the “California Physician Corps.”

Discovering Alternative Healthcare

A growing family led him to again move away from home and begin working in the Dallas, Texas area. Frustrated by conventional medicine’s inability to effectively treat the many chronic health conditions in today’s children, he decided to switch gears and focus his work in acute care medicine, beginning work in Pediatric Urgent Care. Later, he joined the faculty at the University of Texas Southwestern’s medical school as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics in the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Division at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. Although the work was interesting and exciting, he realized that he was best suited to outpatient work and preventive medicine.

During that time, his own children were experiencing chronic health conditions of their own which, despite seeing many specialists, were not getting answers using the conventional medical model. Out of frustration and desperation, his kids saw an alternative healthcare practitioner, who effectively diagnosed and healed them, when they had seen numerous specialists and general pediatricians over the years and had essentially gotten nowhere. This was a very humbling experience, and was ultimately the beginning of his receptivity to alternative paradigms of health and healing. It made him wonder what else the conventional model of medicine was missing. Perhaps alternative healthcare was the “missing link” that he had needed to help those children with chronic diseases that he had treated previously when he was practicing primary care.

Kathmandu, Nepal

Before returning to Southern California, he and his family took a life-long dreamed of trip through Asia, where he visited a number of pilgrimage sites, became a certified yoga teacher, studied yoga therapy, Ayurveda and Reiki. He now hopes to help families and their children by combining the best of allopathic medicine for acute care needs, functional and holistic medicine for chronic medical conditions, and yoga and yoga therapy for mind-body-spirit medicine.

When he is not busy in medical practice, he enjoys spending time with his wife and 2 daughters, hiking/backpacking, mountain biking and body surfing. He also is an avid student of Eastern Philosophy and enjoys yoga and studying religious texts from the Hindu and Buddhist traditions in particular.
